2011

ELIGIBILITY
The showmanship program is open to anyone interested in showing Percheron horses at designation fairs.
Must be:
 Between the ages of 7 and 18 years old as of January 1st of the current year.
 Be a PAID member of the Ontario Percheron Horse Association Inc. (OPHA $10.00 Junior Membership fee),

CLASSES
JUNIOR - age 7 to 13 years old
SENIOR – age 14 to 18 years old

Some fairs will show all classes together but points will be awarded to each age category.

PARTICIPATING FAIRS/SHOWS

We are pleased to announce changes to the Ontario Percheron Horse Association's Junior Showmanship program. We are hoping it will encourage more juniors to get involved in our program. There are no longer designated ‘junior points’ fairs. If your local fair has a Junior Showmanship class and it can be verified (fair book online, etc.) it will count towards points for your junior. It is however the showman’s responsibility to submit the results and fair details to the association as there is no feasible way to track results from all the fairs across the province. The new rules will apply for Junior  Cart and Team classes as well.

Please e-mail the Fall Fair you competed at and placing (out of number of exhibitors, e.g. 2nd out of 5 Jr’s) to: lynngreenwood10@gmail.com

All prize money (excluding the year-end points awards) will be paid to the exhibitors directly by the fair. The exhibitor may show at as many shows as they wish. However, ONLY the six best scores will count towards the year-end points awards. You may show any Percheron horse. The entry does not have to be owned by you.

Please note that some shows offer Junior Showmanship classes but are not on our selected list of fairs and therefore, do not count towards the points awarded at year-end.

JUDGING
All exhibitors are judged on the following:
HORSE: Walk, trot, turn, and back up, grooming and decorations.

EXHIBITOR: Watching the judge, presentation, suitability of showman to horse, handling, appearance and proper dress, and ability to control horse.
The placing by the judge shall be considered final.

POINTS PROGRAM
Points are awarded and calculated at the end of the show season. You may show at as many shows as you wish. Only the SIX best scores will count towards the year-end awards. This is to make it fair for those who cannot make it to as many shows. The following schedule is used to calculate the points awarded according to the total number of entries shown in each class.

# Of Entries

1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8TH
1-5 5 4 3 2 1
6-9 8 6 5 4 3 2 1
10+ 10 8 6 5 4 3 2 1

Please note that the Junior or Senior points are calculated based on the exhibitors actual placing if all breeds have shown together. Individuals that have not paid their memberships are not eligible for the year-end awards.

Awards are presented at the Annual Banquet and Dance held in February. The top 10 paid juniors members from each class that accumulate points will be recognized with a year-end award at the Annual Banquet and Dance.

The sponsors present perpetual trophies for the year-end winners and the OPHA provides keeper awards.

JEFF HODGSON MEMORIAL DIRECTOR’S AWARD

The Jeff Hodgson Memorial Director’s Award was created in 2003. This award is awarded to a paid junior member of the Ontario Percheron Horse Association (one in each category: Junior and Senior). Junior members can only win this award once.

In 2010 the process for awarding the Jeff Hodgson Memorial Award was amended so that the Junior Members will decide who, from their peers, will be awarded the memorial award.

The OPHA Junior Director will provide the Juniors with a list of Junior Members. They will then be asked to vote for each category. The Junior Director will then do a final tally of the nominations.

A Junior, in each of the two categories (Junior and Senior) that receives the award, will best exemplify the following qualities.

 A willingness to try their best both in the show ring and out
 A willingness to pitch in and help other when a need arises
 Good Sportsmanship
 Always striving to improve their horsemanship skills

A keeper award and cash in the amount of $100.00 will be awarded to the winner in each category.
